THE TEACHER’S (POTENTIAL) STRIKE

While FOR/HA is not permitted to endorse, promote or take a position on the impending teacher’s strike, please note that the leaders of the UTLA announced their members will strike on Thursday, Jan 10, unless they reach an agreement on a new contract with LAUSD.
The contract talks have been going on for about a year and a half and are centered around several issues: higher salaries (a 6.5% across the board salary increase), smaller class sizes, more nurses and librarians, more counselors, social workers and deans, and smaller special education caseloads.
Per Ms. Gamba, should the teacher’s strike, ‘additional certificated staff will be deployed to school sites from the District offices. WRMS will have a plan in place for utilizing all staff on campus, with the support of the certificated staff, to provide supervision of all students.
The plan is that students will rotate in activities between a classroom setting, Auditorium, and outdoors. Each setting will have adequate supervision.’
While the Administration recommends that all students should be in school everyday, regardless of the strike, should you choose to keep your child home, the school will follow the same practice as they do for all absences, which includes a written note from the parent/guardian explaining the reason for the absence. If the student has more than 7 absences at the end of the year, when we review students culmination eligibility, then the student can submit an appeal to the committee as needed.
Ms. Gamba reminds us that we are a strong school community with our focus on our children. And that while the coming week(s) will present challenges for all of us, she knows that together we will support each other and our families. We’re All In For The Wolfpack!
