Homeless and animal shelter donations

Posted by on Nov 16, 2013 in 6th GRADE, 7th GRADE, 8th - Ms. Szymanski, 8th GRADE, Front Page, Ms. Siminski | 0 comments

Hi there,
I am asking the students to help the other academies with the collection of canned food for the homeless (non perishable thanksgiving type foods or gift cards) and old blankets, or towels or pet food for a local animal shelter. I think it is important that young people learn to help others and this is always a good time of year to make it a teachable moment. If you can reinforce this idea with you child and have them bring in any of the items below before next Wednesday that would be great. It is so appreciated. It would be great if each one of my 220 students brought in only one item. How great would that be!
Happy Thanksgiving to all. May you enjoy the week off (starting in a week!!)

Items needed
Old towels, blankets
pet food

Canned veggies like beans, corn, onion topping
stuffing mix
instant mashed potatoes
chicken broth

Speaker request for 7th grade

Posted by on Oct 28, 2013 in 7th - Ms. Szymanski, 7th GRADE, Front Page | 0 comments

We are beginning our unit on percents, markups, discounts, tips, sales tax etc. I am looking to see if there is anyone out there who deals with commission, or is in the restaurant business or in real estate, who can come in and talk to the classes and explain how percents deal with their jobs. I think it is interesting for them to hear that although a realtor might make a 7% commission on a house they sell, they don’t actually get all that money. Or how a waitress must give some of their tip to the busboy etc. It would be nice to have several speakers or just one.
If you can come some time in the next week or so email me at
Thank you
Ms szymanski

Thank you everyone!!

I just want to give a big thank you to all the parents and students who either worked on or came to support our Reeds Got talent show. Each year i think I am not going to do it anymore and then when it comes to the night of the show I am so proud of all the students. I laugh, cry and most of all am happy that I am able to give the kids an opportunity to experience the life in the theater. From my stage crew to talent, they all tell me how they didnt realize how much work it takes to put on a show. I think that is the great part of this all.
I am also thrilled to see the support from the audience members for their peers and how much they cheered and have a good time. We try for positivity and I think that happens each year.
My fellow teachers are also such wonderful people to put themselves out there like that for the students. They all know how important it is for students to see us as real people who can also be silly and have a good time. Plus to be honest we have a blast too! they are already asking what our act will be next year.
Thank you parents for EVERYTHING YOU DO!! The lobby looked wonderful, the food is excellent and you guys are just fantastic. I would not even begin to do this without your help. You are so appreciated and I am very very thankful.
So as we move on with the rest of the year, I want to send my thanks to all of you. Please thank any of the participating teachers as well. It is hard to get them to stay on a Friday night, and they did so willingly and with lots of love.
thank you Ms Szymanski

Ps  here is the link for the teacher act if you missed it.  Please also join that page as my brother is starting a studio city examiner page where he will cover much of Walter Reed events

Thanks for your cooperation

upcoming 7th and 8th grade tests

Posted by on Sep 2, 2013 in 7th - Ms. Szymanski, 7th GRADE, 8th - Ms. Szymanski, 8th GRADE, Front Page | 0 comments

FYI, all my classes will be having their first chapter tests this week on Wednesday the 4t. They knew about this last week. We will be reviewing in class on Tuesday. During Nutrition on Wednesday i will have a review session for my 8th graders and then before school that day I will review with the 7th graders. Those 7th graders wanting to review before school, meet outside of B building around 7:20 and i will come get the group to come up and practice some problems.
This weekend, teachers are to put in their first grades for the first progress report. It is possible that they will recieve an NG meaning no grade from me. The first progress report is always startling for some because they are usually very good or very bad because there are not many grades entered and not many tests and quizzes yet. As the semester goes one there will be more grades to average in. So don’t be alarmed the first grading period.
Have a happy last few hours of our long weekend

Welcome all. Schedules are still being worked on, and everyone is still getting used to being back to school. (me as well!). but this week we begin the work. Generally I give homework everyday but try not to on Fridays. They may have to finish something because they procrastinated in class a little. My assignments and lesson plans are planned ahead of time, but homework can change daily because of how fast or how slow each class picks up. It wil take me about a month to figure out the generally prior knowledge of the students I havent had before.
Most importantly keep checking that their math notebooks are organized, which means mainly to glue things in, and keep up the notes. All work is done in the spiral notebook. every month or so, check on it and see how it is doing.
I will be staying after school on Wednesdays. Please tell your child to come right after school, because if no one shows up I will leave by 3;10. I will stay till 3:30 or longer if needed. other times for help is during nutrition and before school. Before school they should email me in case i have a parent conference and cant meet with students. They can email the night before not later than 9 pm.
Looking forward to a great year! any questions email me at
Ms szymanski
ps: my constant wish list items are paper towels, kleenex, jolly ranchers, wipes, computer paper. thanks!!!
