Friends of Reed – Humanities Academy

The Humanities Academy at Walter Reed Middle school is one of the best public middle school programs in the city, and this is no accident. Active parental involvement, generosity, and fundraising are paramount to the preservation of quality in this enriched program.

Annual Giving

To deliver an outstanding program which benefits approximately 300 students enrolled in the academy, an annual fundraising goal is set at $30,000, which comes solely from the support of families and friends of the program. To meet this budget, we ask that every Humanities Academy family contribute to the FOR-Humanities Annual Giving Campaign. Some of what we have funded in the past include:

  • Underwriting the costs of substitutes and buses for Field trips to venues such as the Getty Villa and the Natural History Museum
  • Onsite enrichment that makes our curriculum come alive – including scientists, writers, environmental workshops, Shakespeare workshop, a Holocaust survivor, museums on wheels which we fund to come to our students, and much more.
  • Classic literature novels, such as Jack London’s Call of the Wild and Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, and others to supplement standard textbooks
  • Financial assistance so that all students have an opportunity to attend class trips
  • Updates to computer systems, Chromebook tablets for students, classroom printers, and funding of teacher supplies, classroom equipment, and teacher collaboration dinners
  • And much more!

Our goal is to have 100% participation from all of our FOR-HA families. Have you contributed?

  • The suggested contribution is $500 per family (that’s $50/month if you decide to give monthly)
  • If every family donated $109 we’d reach our goal
  • Any amount you can give will help us reach this year’s budget!

“Friends of Reed” is a 501(c)(3) organization and your donation is 100% tax deductible. We accept cash, check and online donations.

If you are interested in the FOR-HA community or how FOR-HA funds are raised and spent, please join us on the second Thursday of every month, alternating between morning and evening meetings. Check the calendar for meeting time and location.
