News & information for the week of March 27th

Parents, we can breathe a collective sigh of relief and be very thankful that LAUSD responded to our concern! In response to the PHBAO Meeting earlier this month LAUSD worked to find a funding formula that basically covers the lost funding that once came from PHBOA. Our class sizes remain the same. Yeah!

A wake up call. This unique funding situation lasts for 1 year, and assumes that Walter Reed will once again meet ethnic ratio of “70% Hispanic, Black, Asian, or other and 30% White.” Our community must be mindful of this and fill out district ethnicity forms highlighting their diversity where applicable. Being PHBAO is a critical distinction for our school.

Educating our families and incoming families is also critical. As the new school year unfolds, plan to support this goal and talk about it with the families you know. Parent volunteers will be especially helpful at incoming 6th grade events to help families understand how best to fill out entrance forms so the diversity at Walter Reed is clearly seen in the LAUSD data collected. Again, FOHA families are a strong, articulate group, and this is a goal we can meet!

7th Graders leave for their NatureBridge retreat on March 29 – 31. Enjoy all the hiking and science of the great outdoors! Special thanks Ms. Monteil and Christi Goodman for making the trip happen. Packing List still posted at:

All our 8th graders are headed to Haskell Creek area of Balboa Park for a Picnic + Clean-Up this Thursday, March 30th. Ms. Dagilis + Ms. Siminski, along with parent chaperones, will work with the students to participate in park and creek beautification, followed by a picnic. Students bring their own lunch + drink… sports ball, towel or sheet to picnic on if they like. Have a great time!

Thursday’s BAKE SALE was a big hit! Special thanks go to Margaret Goldenberg and all who helped baking and selling these treats. More sweets needed… its an ongoing fundraiser happening every Thursday! 2 -3 parents needed to help sell, and muffins and cookies sent to school for the throngs of hungry kids! Contact Margaret Goldenberg at if you’re free this week.

Humanities Academy is excited to welcome in our new class of 6th Graders for 2017-18. We have full enrollment of bright and talented students, once again showing the strength of our academy. A Welcome Reception is scheduled for them THIS SUNDAY April 2 from 3 – 5:00pm.

“Welcome Committee” needed. A few 7th Grade parent volunteers needed to attend and help answer questions from our new parents. Please email: to sign up and get the details.

We are looking for a graphic artist good with branding and/or page layout to help Friends of Reed create fresh Annual Giving Forms, clarifying the information sent out and uniting our 6 SLC’s. The forms would not go out until next year. Interested?? Let us know at:

Remember to save those shopping receipts and bring them to Reed’s Main Office for real $$$. When you shop on Ventura Boulevard (between Carpenter Avenue and Whitsett, including Trader Joes and Vons shopping receipts) we receive 10% of the receipts collected from the Studio City Improvement Association.
