THIS WEEK in HUMANITIES…

News & information for the week of March 20th

PHBAO MEETING RECAP

Gotta LOVE our FOHA parents!! While the recent LAUSD meeting to discuss our lost PHBOA status was not the most pleasant one to attend, several Humanities parents came, spoke and represented our needs very well. You are a passionate, articulate group; that is indeed our strength!

The bottom line is that our enrollment paperwork states that our school is over 30% white, and (along with 9 other middle schools) we will lose PHBOA status next year. There is a slight chance that the school board will vote to stay this decision for the 2017-18 year; we will know if the stay was granted at the beginning of this week and will let you know immediately. The primary result of exiting PHBAO is that core subject class sizes (Math, English, History, Science) increase to an average of 39 (from 36) students. The school will have fewer teachers overall due to that increase. Our job as organized, dynamic parents is to make sure that increase does not diminish our children’s learning and experience at Reed. That takes a village. Please get involved. As your board, we will try to navigate a clear path to get extra funds, and to spend them well. We need your input however, and we need your helping hands. Please come to the next FOHA Meeting on April 6th. The more you ALL know, the more strategic we can be in our efforts.

STEP #1 - BRING US YOUR RECEIPTS

Here’s one practical step you can do right now! Save your shopping receipts and bring them to Reed for real $$$. When you shop on Ventura Boulevard (between Carpenter Avenue and Whitsett, including Trader Joes and Vons shopping receipts) this qualifies the school to receive up to 10 percent of the receipts collected (up to $5,500) from the Studio City Improvement Association. The collection box is located in main office and marked Ventura Shopping receipts. We CAN DO this! Start collecting this week!

STEP #2- NEW FOHA FUNDRAISER NEEDS YOU!

Starting this Thursday, we will be selling baked goods after school in front of the auditorium. We need 2 or 3 parents to come and bring muffins and cookies and sell them to the throngs of hungry kids! Contact Margaret Goldenberg at Margaretgoldenberg@mac.com if you’re free this week. This will be an ongoing fundraiser and we will need help every week. Stay tuned!
